Urea Test

The urea test is a common blood test that measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood. Urea is a waste product formed in the liver when proteins are broken down. It is primarily excreted through the kidneys in the form of urine. This test is used to assess kidney function and determine how well the kidneys are filtering and eliminating waste products from the body. It is often ordered as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel or renal function panel. Elevated levels of urea in the blood, known as azotemia, can indicate impaired kidney function or other medical conditions. This test is commonly performed to diagnose and monitor kidney diseases, dehydration, heart failure, liver disease, urinary tract obstruction, or certain medications' side effects. It is also used to assess the overall health status before surgeries or in critically ill patients.
