The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test is a blood test that measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the bloodstream. Urea nitrogen is a waste product formed in the liver as a result of protein metabolism. It is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and eliminated in the urine. The BUN test is commonly used to assess kidney function and to evaluate how well the kidneys are filtering waste products from the blood. Elevated levels of BUN in the blood, known as azotemia, can indicate impaired kidney function, dehydration, urinary tract obstruction, or other medical conditions.
