Skin Cancer Causes & Risk Factors

skin cancer causes risk factors

The majority of the skin cancers are caused by the exposure to sun (UV rays), however there are other common causes and risk factor also.

The post here discusses the skin cancer causes, reasons and risk factors.

Skin Cancer Causes

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers and is caused due to evolution of abnormal cells which can even affect other parts of body. The cancer occurs when the DNA of skin cells gets damaged; these cells are called the cancerous cells. The rapid and abnormal growth of cancerous cells causes.

The common causes that damaged these cells are:

  • Sunburns -

Sunburn causes the melanoma cancer, which is known to be the most dangerous skin cancer. This cancer takes place when a person comes in contact with the direct sunlight for a long period of time which damages the skin cells.

  • Tanning -

Tanning is the sign that the skin has been exposed so much to the ultra violet rays (either by sun or solarium), which is not a healthy thing for the skin. Tanning results in wrinkly skin, sagging or brown patches on the skin and increase the risk of succumbing to this disease.

  • Solariums -

Solariums is a kind of room that is built of glass, used to have enhanced sun exposure. These rooms are majorly used to get tanning. These solariums are not the safe way to get the tanning as the ultra violet radiations in these rooms increase the risk of cancer.

Skin Cancer Risk Factors

Other than the cause of skin cancer there are some factors that can increase the risk of skin cancer:

  • Fair skin -

You would be surprised to know that being fair skinned is also one of the skin cancer causes. Skin cancer can be found in anyone around the world, regardless of the skin color. However, a fair skin has fewer pigments than darker skins, which provides less protection from damaging effects done by ultra violet radiation.

  • A history of sunburns -

People who have been suffering from sunburns from time to time, have high risk of succumbing to this disease.

  • Excessive sun exposure -

When a person spends a lot of time in the direct sun light (with no protection of sunscreen or clothing), there is increased risk of developing skin cancer.

  • Moles -

Having moles on the skin increases the risk of getting skin cancer. If you have a family history of skin cancer then your chances of getting affected with this disease becomes even higher.

Exposure to the sun is the major cause of skin cancers. This may be either due to short-term or long-term periods of overexposure. The ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun damages the skin's genetic material. Other risk factors like moles, immune suppression, fair skin, etc can lead to skin cancer. So, it is always best to book an appointment with your doctor in case you notice any skin changes that worry you.
