Colon Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

Colon Cancer Prevention

There is a strong probability of colon cancer not getting detected in its early stages as there are no specific colon cancer early signs or symptom but with regular screening, it is possible to find the disease in initial stage. However, the risk factors and symptoms suggest that there are certain ways which can help to reduce the risk of colon cancer or completely prevent the disease to occur.

Include Fruits, Vegetables and Whole Grains in Diet

Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are the direct source of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibers that plays the major role in prevention of colon cancer. Everyone (especially after the age of 50) is advised to take healthy meals with high ratio of fibers to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Controlled Consumption of Alcohol

It is healthy to completely stop the consumption of alcohol, however, if not possible, people are advised to limit the amount of alcohol they drink. It is suggested to take the alcohol not more than 4 drinks a week.

No Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of the colon cancer as the tobacco inhaled helps the cancerous cells to grow. Quitting smoking is the best way to prevent the risk of colon cancer.

Exercise

Exercise helps the body to stay healthy as well as it help in the reduction of other risk factors of the colon cancer, like, obesity. Exercise is advised for everyday to prevent the colon cancer, if not possible, at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. A doctor's advice can be taken for a better exercise plan.

Maintain the weight

Staying fit and healthy not only helps in preventing colon cancer but also helps in reducing risk of a lot more diseases, like, diabetes or obesity. Body weight should not exceed the recommended limit (depending on height or BMI) and if in excess, take doctor's advice for healthy ways to lose the weight. Regular exercise and healthy diet is recommended for everyone.

Calcium and Vitamin D

Calcium and vitamin D is essential for the patients of colon cancer and they also protect from the disease. It is medically advised to consume 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium and about 1,000 IU of vitamin D every day to stay healthy and keep the colon cancer away.

To live healthy & happy, one must keep a check on the body’s functioning by going for regular health checkups. This helps in assessing risk factors and diagnosing diseases at an early stage, which will result in effective treatment and better management of the condition.
