Colon Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment

Colon Cancer Diagnosis

The causes and the symptoms of the colon cancer are still unclear, hence to come to a concrete diagnosis of the cancer, one cannot rely on the signs or symptoms. However, the risk factors like, age, smoking or family history of colon cancer should not be ignored. The person who has any of the risk factors should go for a screening to diagnose the disease.

The post here put together the information about colon cancer diagnosis, colon cancer treatment, colon cancer chemotherapy, colon cancer prognosis and colon cancer detection.

It is suggested to everyone, who is at the age of 50 or more, to go for regular screening for colon cancer. There are several kind of screening tests suggested by the health care providers:

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)

It is the test to check the hidden blood in stool. Presence of blood cells is checked under microscope in the stool sample.

Sigmoidoscopy

It is the examination of the rectum/lower part of large intestine using a lighted instrument known as sigmoidoscope. It is the process to find the cancerous cells in the organ so that they can be removed or examined further.

Colonoscopy

This test includes the examination of rectum or entire colon with a lighted instrument known as colonoscope. The goal of the process is to find the precancerous or cancerous cells and remove them or test them for further diagnosis.

Virtual colonoscopy or computerized tomographic colonography:

A special x-ray device is used for producing a 3D picture of the colon. Then the pictures are assembled into the detailed images which shows the polyps or other abnormalities inside the colon.

Colon Cancer Treatment

There are several treatment methodologies available for the people suffering from colon cancer, these standard treatments includes - surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Surgery

Surgery is the most common treatment for all the phases of the colon cancer, where the doctors remove the tumor or the tissue affected by the cancer.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a treatment for all kinds of cancers. The therapy includes the use of drugs to pause or end the growth of the cancer cells, either by killing all the cancerous cells or by stopping the division of these cells.

The process of chemotherapy includes the injection of drugs by mouth or into the veins or muscles. These drugs reach to the cancerous cells by getting along with bloodstream, the process is also called the systematic chemotherapy.

In the other process, the chemotherapy takes place directly into the spinal column or in the affected organ so that the drugs directly target the cancerous cells in there.

Radiation Therapy

The radiation therapy uses a high energy x-rays or any other kind of radiation to kill the cancerous cells or to stop their growth.

There are two kinds of radiation therapies, one is the external radiation therapy, in which a machine is used from outside of the body to target the cancerous cells. Second is the internal radiation therapy, in which radioactive substances, wrapped in the needles, wires, seeds or catheters are placed inside the body close or onto the cancer affected area.

To live healthy & happy, one must keep a check on the body’s functioning by going for regular health checkups. This helps in assessing risk factors and diagnosing diseases at an early stage, which will result in effective treatment and better management of the condition.
